01 · The challenge

Installation was only
the beginning of the habit.

BetterMe provides mobile workout and nutrition services. Helping people act on personal goals called for communication beyond the app. Workout and meal reminders could provide a reason to return.

The team tried different messaging tools and started building an internal system, but development took time. It adopted OneSignal to give the team more scope to adjust and test its communication.

02 · The approach

Change the audience
and the message together.

BetterMe segmented customers by behavior, preferences and lifecycle stage, then personalized content around their goals. It sent workout and meal reminders, habit prompts and challenges, testing images, sounds, buttons and copy.

In-app messages introduced features without building a separate screen for every announcement. Actions such as completing a workout could also inform the next challenge offered to a customer.

03 · The result

App retention
increased by 22%.

After adopting OneSignal and personalizing messages, BetterMe increased app retention by 22%. Segmentation, content changes and repeated tests helped connect communication to the customer’s context.

Apply it to your service

Choose one next action
for your own app.

First feature use, an activity completed or a return visit: a clear action makes the audience, message and result easier to define.

Connect only the information a campaign needs

Define useful attributes such as selected interests, goals and last activity. Check which details are appropriate to display, and design lock-screen notifications so they do not expose sensitive information.

Customer identifiers and attributes

Design the experience after an action

Introduce a related feature when a customer completes an activity, excluding tasks already finished. Define the destination screen and the fallback for accounts that cannot yet access the feature.

Messaging flows based on behavior

Compare engagement with actual use

Choose the copy or visual element to compare under consistent audience conditions. Review feature completion and return visits alongside notification clicks, then record audience differences for the next campaign.

The roles of push and in-app messages

Questions about implementation

How is personalization different from adding a name?

It connects audience rules with message content. The feature a customer used and the action they may take next can change the guidance. Provide fallback copy for missing attributes and exclude customers who have already completed the target action.

How should we divide push and in-app messaging?

Push gives customers outside the app a reason to return. In-app messages can introduce a feature or next step during use. Define the campaign goal, subscription requirements and display timing before writing each channel’s content.

Are retention and click-through rate the same result?

No. Click-through rate measures response to a message; retention measures whether customers return after a period of time. Define the return action and observation period for your app, then apply them consistently across audiences and campaigns.
